Once you have understood all the possible types of business formats that can be incorporated, you can choose which structure would suit you best. If you decide to run as a sole proprietor or partnership, there is no need to register your business. However, all other business structures must be registered with the South African Companies and Intellectual Properties Commission (CIPC). Even though, one can register a company through the CIPC website, or the self – service terminals situated in Pretoria, Johannesburg or Cape Town, or email, it is advisable to get a professional to perform this process of company registration, since it is usually quite a frustrating process. At this stage you will be required to submit information regarding the details of ownership, who the directors will be, and details about the company such as financial year end, authorised shares, email address, website and physical and postal address. The next stage is “company name reservation” where you can submit up to four possible names, in order of preference, and the first available name will be selected. Note that the registration and operations of your business will be regulated by the Companies Act.
